Focus Strategies & Solutions has worked closely with a leading national waste management company to design, develop & implement a distributed browser based datawarehouse solution. This included deployment & training numerous business units across Australia, both Finance & Operations accessed the datawarehouse over their Wide Area Network (WAN).
Finance were the ‘foundation’ users with substantial value added reporting & analysis tools developed to assist with some of the difficulties faced using centralised systems. Various interfaces between Financial & Operational software were simplified by utilising powerful drill through techniques essentially providing a common point of entry for reporting and analysis. Such a solution also alleviates the common problem of core systems essentially optimised for processing rather than reporting.
It wasn’t long before the benefits were being realised across the organisation and a demand quickly grew for the project to be extended to key operational data. This included analysis of customer information & was pushed down to a route level such that the business had the competitive benefit of being able to monitor profitability of individual trucks by route; sales by territory manager; customer churn; tipping expenses by tip & route; customer groupings and many other key performance metrics.
The end result was an emergence from the cumbersome days of spending more time piecing together data rather than analysing it. Today, this waste management company manages strategy based on scientific analysis rather than instinct without substantiation providing a sound foundation for decision making which is critical in what is essentially a commodity based industry.
